On the night before Christmas, all across the world, millions of childrenwill be tucked in their beds while visions of sugarplums dance in their heads. When they awake they will check their stockings to see if Santa Claus hascome.
Santa Claus has become the most beloved of Christmas symbols andtraditions. The image of the jolly old elf flying in a sleigh pulled byreindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is know worldwide.
Just like the season of Christmas, the history of the origins of SantaClaus is influenced by the customs and cultures of many countries, beginning inAsia Minor sometime around the 4th century AD. It was here that Bishop Nicholasbecame renowned for his exceptional generosity, especially to the very young. Many years later he became known as Saint Nicholas, the patron saint ofchildren.
As time went on, adults began to dress in the manner of Saint Nicholas, dressed in Bishops vestments and carrying a staff., to re-enact the kindness ofthe saint. They went from house to house, asking if the children who lived therehad been well behaved. In response to these visits, the children left theirshoes outside the doors of their houses so that next morning they might findthem filled with sweets and trinkets.
An Anglo-Saxon version eventually evolved and was known as FatherChristmas. His character was a mixture of the Saint Nicholas and earthlyperceptions of the gods Thor and Saturn. He wore robes decorated with ivy andholly and carried a switch to threaten unruly children, as well as a bag of toysto reward the well behaved.

Christmas is a time for miracles. It is also a time when the dull things ofdaily life and the forecast of human hature gives way to a spiritualawakening.Allow me to share with you one truly wonder of Christmas.
Our miracle story comes from an incident that occurred in Flanders,Belgium, at the dawn of World War I. On December 24th ,1914, German and Englishtroops faced each other from the relative safety of their ditches across whichno man’s land lying between them. Suddenly, the silence was broken, not bygunfire, but by the strains of Silent Night arising from the German position. Itwasn’t long before the English troops responded with a Yuletide hymn of theirown. Then an amazing sight surprised the eyes of the English soldiers. A Germansoldier holding a small tree arranged with lighted candles began to walk acrossthe land toward the English lines. This miraculous scene occasioned thedeclaration of a truce followed by English and German troops greeting oneanother, exchanging small gifts and singing songs of Christmas. Word of thisincredible phenomenon reached the High Command of both sides.
On Christmas Day, both armies moved from their positions to engage in thekilling of war at other battlefields. However, on Christmas Eve 1914 on a fieldin Flanders, there was Peace on Earth.
Christmas is a truly amazing phenomenon. The day and season perpetuate amiraculous, historical event as an annual presence that challenges an oftenrough, cruel, and egotistical creature — the human being — to become open andamenable to their Creator’s vision. The great miracle of Christmas continues inthe performance of humane acts, moral honesty, and in the spiritual awareness ofmillions struggling to lead a life of grace.
